Born in the Rhineland, Wilhelm Horn opened his first brandy and liqueur business in Leipzig-Gohlis on the 26th of January 1923, right next to the Schillerhaus. In the middle of the economic crisis, the 24-year-old starts as a one-man business with a handcart. His motto is: "To give pleasure to the fellow human beings with delicious drinks, to make the sorrowful hours of life easier for them, to help beautify the happy days and to be a welcome companion for all special occasions in life". more
Just one year after its foundation, Wilhelm Horn moves to the Johannisplatz. His concept "Horn - Brand for everyone" started bearing the first fruits. "Everyman" - that was the workers and employees, to whom he offered "inexpensive yet high-quality products". Branches open first in the south and west of the city. A former sparkling wine cellar at Arndtstraße 33 became Horn's new production site. The blue horn on an orange background is used as an advertising brand to decorate bottles, cars and shop fronts. more
A two-story wine tavern from Horn was built in Arndtstraße. Large illuminated billboards outside and comfortably furnished guest rooms inside welcome the visitors over the next decades. Pictures of the Rhine and Moselle, Cochem Castle and Stolzenfels remind us of the home of the company founder. A pint costed 33 Reichspfennig, the appetizers only 10 Reichspfennig. In addition to the restaurant, 29 sales outlets were opened in Leipzig alone. By 1933 there were already 45 Branch offices - among others in Dresden, Halle, Weißenfels, Oschatz, Wurzen, Naumburg. more
In the cellar of the building were huge storage rooms where the wine was stored - brown bottles from the Rhine and green ones from the Moselle. But also Franconian "Bocksbeutel", thick Bordeaux bottles and "bouteilles" from Burgundy were to be found here, as well as fine wines from Italy, Greece, Portugal and Hungary. The spirits of Horns' special brands filled the shelves in incalculable numbers, as did cognacs, champagnes, sparkling wines and spirits. Fruit wine, fruit juices and mineral water completed the range in the warehouse. Well over half a million bottles had room in the cellars of the Wilhelmstraße - in addition, there were of course several wine barrels and about a million corks. The corking machines clattered undaunted, at some times around 10,000 bottles were encapsulated and labelled per day.
Numerous sales offices were destroyed in air raids and the factory premises were severely damaged. The post-war period was therefore initially characterized by reconstruction. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary in 1948, the company founder expressed his hopes in the following words: "I hope and wish for a unified Germany, the abolition of the inhibiting zone borders and the integration of Germany into the circle of the great family of nations". For the time being this is not being fulfilled. The sealing off of the Soviet occupation zone and later the GDR brought trade to a standstill and the restrictions of the planned economy were anything but conducive to private enterprise. more
In 1969 the company founder Wilhelm Horn passed away. Thus he does not live to see his life's work nationalized shortly before the company's 50th anniversary in 1972. In 1972, the company was nationalized shortly before its 50th anniversary and became part of the Kombinate Stadtkellerei Leipzig. The name "WILHELM HORN" was removed from the company building and banned from the market until German reunification. more
In 1991 the company was reprivatized. The son of the founder, Klaus Horn, took over the management. After retirement, Klaus Horn transferred the enormous potential of brand diversity, recipes, company heritage and genuine Leipzig tradition to the newly founded Wilhelm Horn Markenspirituosen GmbH in 2005. In the spirit of the founding family, they revived the company and settled it in its new home at Bayrischer Platz 1 in Leipzig. more
